ENGINEERING DESIGN: AN INTRODUCTION, Second Edition, features an innovative instructional approach emphasizing projects and exploration as learning tools. This engaging text provides an overview of the basic engineering principles that shape our modern world, covering key concepts within a flexible, two-part format. Part I describes the process of engineering and technology product design, while Part II helps students develop specific skill sets needed to understand and participate in the process. Opportunities to experiment and learn abound, with projects ranging from technical drawing to designing electrical systems--and more. With a strong emphasis on project-based learning, the text is an ideal resource for programs using the innovative Project Lead the Way curriculum to prepare students for success in engineering careers. The text's broad scope and sound coverage of essential concepts and techniques also make it a perfect addition to any engineering design course.

  • Throughout the text, numerous case studies, career profiles, and featured articles demonstrate how engineers develop career pathways, work through product failures, and innovate to continuously improve various products, giving students critical real-world context for the concepts and skills they are learning.
  • The authors provide extensive coverage of practical techniques related to documenting ideas, technical drawing, human factors, design styles, and additional topics to help students apply what they have learned and prepare for career success.
  • Abundant figures and illustrations in every chapter help clarify key concepts and provide support for visual learners.
  • A special section devoted to applied math and science makes it easy for instructors to integrate key concepts from core academic subjects and support broad-based learning within an engineering context.
  • The Second Edition features expanded information on current engineering careers, including the unique characteristics of many engineering sub-disciplines and career profiles to help students explore the range of possibilities within the engineering field.
  • Additional information on technical drawing strengthens the text's emphasis on this essential practical skill, including information on measuring and commonly used measuring tools and systems.
  • The text includes extensive updates to provide current coverage of the latest research tools, making it easier for students to find information for design assignments and gain familiarity with resources and concepts used by modern industry professionals.
  • A new chapter on design styles provides useful reinforcement to help students complete design assignments successfully and develop an appreciation for the range and role of styles in modern engineering.
