Balancing biological, psychological, social, and cultural approaches, this book's ground-breaking integrative approach is the most modern, scientifically valid method for studying abnormal psychology. Updated with leading-edge research findings, the eighth edition draws on the expertise of David H. Barlow, V. Mark Durand, and Stefan G. Hofmann, three internationally recognized experts in clinical psychology. In ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY: AN INTEGRATIVE APPROACH, the authors successfully blend sophisticated research with an accessible, engaging writing style. They go beyond simply describing different schools of thought on psychological disorders, exploring the interactions of the various forces that contribute to psychopathology.

  • Every chapter in the eighth edition has been carefully revised to reflect the very latest research studies on psychological disorders, with hundreds of new references appearing for the first time.
  • Unlike texts that take a linear single-cause, single-treatment approach, Barlow, Durand, and Hofmann integrate the contributions of biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors into descriptions of the etiology and treatment of psychopathology. Frequently, a single case is carried throughout the discussion of each disorder, including coverage of treatment issues and outcomes.
  • Case studies featuring real clients are incorporated into the flow of the text, providing a realistic context for the scientific research in the book. These case studies ensure that students never lose sight of the fact that beyond diagnostic criteria, theory, and research, there are human beings struggling with these disorders.
  • This text features substantial, cutting-edge coverage of prevention. The authors discuss a variety of topics that will pique students' interest -- for example, how to prevent eating disorders, sleep disorders, substance abuse and dependence, suicide, antisocial disorders in children, and more.
  • The authors thoroughly cover cultural and gender factors as they relate to abnormal behavior. For example, an updated discussion of services for individuals with gender dysphoria is included in Chapter 10, "Sexual Dysfunctions, Paraphilic Disorders, and Gender Dysphoria."
  • Four to five "Concept Checks" at the end of every section allow students to apply concepts to particular cases and help them master the material as they move through each chapter.
  • The major strength of this new edition is the way in which it continues to lead the market with ground-breaking updates to research findings. Topics include updated views on the concept of "abnormality," new developments in dimensional classification of mental disorders, and cutting-edge research studies illustrating the difference between clinical and statistical significance.
  • Chapter 2, "An Integrative Approach to Psychopathology," includes updates on the contribution of genetic factors and recent discoveries in neuroscience as they relate to psychopathology.
  • Chapter 5, "Anxiety, Trauma, and Stressor-Related and Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders," includes new material on the principles of extinction learning in the treatment of anxiety and related disorders.
  • Chapter 7, "Mood Disorders and Suicide," discusses the defining features of the newly created diagnosis of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder.
  • New and updated content includes information on public health approaches to treating obesity, data on international trends in personality traits, and findings on the neurological effects of stimulant medication. The authors also cover the neurobiological mechanisms of opioid abuse and statistics of illicit opioid prescription, cross-cultural differences in Alzheimer's disease (including new information about the psychological burden of caretakers), and updated research on predictors of violence and aggression.
  • Throughout, this edition highlights the latest innovations in the treatment of mental disorders, including advancements in mindfulness-based therapies and new approaches to the treatment of schizophrenia.
  • Stefan G. Hofmann, an internationally recognized expert in the field of clinical psychology, joins the author team in this edition.
